Vintage soviet SLR ZENIT-3 with early HELIOS-44, from 1961 – in great condition!

Zenit-3 replaced the original Zenit and Zenit-S in the early 60’s (production from 1960 to 1962). The mechanics were similar to the Zenit-S (mirror was lowered with a [famous] string), but a new great feature was introduced – advance lever replaced a winding knob of the early Leica copies. The camera is still loading from the bottom. The camera has a flash synch mechanism with the adjustable synch timing advance (from 0 to 25 ms). Also, the shutter speed can be selected before of after the film is wound and the shutter is cocked.

The Zenit-3 shows outstanding workmanship, the camera is very solid and was apparently expensive to make. This explains why it was in production for only two years. As any early Zenit it is quite uncommon now *source

Soviet SLR Zenit-3 with Helios-44 – good way to start experiments with film – viewfinder is TTL(ThroughTheLens) – you’ll see what you get. Well, most of it.

Focusing on ground glass is easy – image becomes sharper/more blurry as you focus(unlike in rangefinders).

Built-in take up spool – means you are not going to loose it!

This particular camera is from the series that came with faster Helios-44 lens(as opposed to slower Industar 3.5/50) and quality leather case that becomes half-case(has removable top part)

Camera (s/n 61019097) is in very good to excellent condition – with few signs of normal use.

Shutter speed on this camera can be set before and after cocking the shutter.

Lens (s/n 0057436) is in very good condition as well – glass is clean and clear, no fungus, no haze.

Few light wipe marks / few dust particles are possible, but these do not affect image quality.

Mechanics are excellent, focus is smooth and uniform.

Aperture blades are clean from oil.

Creates beautiful Biotar style bokeh –

out of focus highlights are rendered as beautiful discs(in the right conditions),

making the background swirl slightly.

13 blades of aperture translates into nice organic bokeh on any aperture – much better then the later eight  and six blades Helioses.

Camera is fully functional and is hungry for film!
