CYCLOP 85mm f/1.5(version of HELIOS-40-2) lens, m42 – from 1992
If there’s one lens to be called the ultimate Soviet legend it would be the HELIOS-40 1.5/85. It’s swirly bokeh inspired many into trying the vintage glass, and really, what this lens can do in the right conditions, blows everything else out of the water – vintage or modern.
Just google “Helios-40” or “Helios-40-2” if you haven’t heard about this lens, check the images it produces and you will realize what you’ve been missing!
Cyclop is a version of Helios-40-2 made for military use on night vision scope, it is considerably smaller and lighter then H-40-2 & it does not feature aperture at all – the f-stop is fixed to f/1.5 permanently!
Some might think it’s limiting, but those who has experience with Helios-40-2 will tell that that’s how you shoot Helios-40-2 anyways – it’s a special purpose lens, whose purpose is of course people portraits with swirls in the background.
