Meyer Optik-Görlitz Primoplan 1.9/58mm – authentic vintage lens from the early 1950s!

MADE IN GERMANY!

M42 screw mount version in silver aluminum –  one of the most versatile and sought-after versions of this optic. The M42 mount (also known as “Pentax Universal”) makes it incredibly easy to adapt to almost any modern digital camera.

Historical & Technical Profile

Production Year: 1952.

Mount: M42 (42mm x 1mm thread). This was the “pro” standard of the time, used on cameras like the Praktica or early Contax S.

Construction: High-quality solid aluminum “Silver” barrel.

Aperture Type: Pre-set or manual. You likely have two rings at the front: one to set the desired aperture and one to quickly stop the lens down before taking the shot.

Iris: This model features 14 curved steel blades. This is a “holy grail” feature for bokeh enthusiasts because it maintains a perfectly circular opening at any f-stop.

Great for photo & video on DSLR, can be used on pretty much any modern camera system – Nikon/Canon, mirrorless systems: Sony NEX, Olympus Pen, Panasonic G, Canon EOS M, Nikon 1, FujiFilm X-mount etc.

Comparison: Silver M42 vs. Later Versions

Feature this lens (1952 Silver) Later “Zebra” / Black Versions
Build Heavier, solid polished aluminum. Lighter, often uses more plastic/thinner alloys.
Aperture 14 Blades (Circular). 6 to 10 Blades (Hexagonal/Star).
Size Slimmer, more compact profile. Bulkier due to automatic diaphragm links.
Mount Native M42 (Highly Adaptable). Often found in Exakta (Harder to adapt).

Optical Behavior

The Primoplan 1.9/58 is often called the “little brother” to the Trioplan. The M42 silver model from the early 50s carries a specific “rendering DNA”:

  • The “3-D” Pop: The transition from the sharp center to the blurred background is very abrupt, which helps subjects “pop” out of the frame.

  • Soap-Bubble Bokeh: While the Trioplan 100mm is the king of bubbles, 58mm Primoplan produces them beautifully at f/1.9, especially with backlit foliage or city lights.

  • Vintage Flare: Being an early single-coated lens, it is prone to artistic “veiling flare” when shooting toward the sun. This creates a warm, nostalgic glow that many photographers now spend hours trying to replicate in Lightroom.

The lens s/n 1223656 is in good overall condition.

Lens has nearly some signs of normal use/age.

Glass has no fungus, but has haze and micro scratches on front lens.

Mechanics are very good – focus is smooth and uniform.

Aperture blades are free from oil.

Comes with yellow filter and generic rear lens cap included
